Hello every one! I haven't blog since 2 years or so! My day job is extremely time-consuming... But now that I have an employee to help me out at the office, I am able to sew, quilt and blog again! These last months, I have created a new collection of bibs, I bought a lot of new fabrics, and... my bibs are now sold at the boutique of the Musée national des Beaux Arts de Québec!!

Last week, I was offer the executive of the Association pour l'enseignement de la science et de la technologie au Québec (APSQ) (Association for teaching of science and technology in Quebec). I accepted, of course! I will also be editor-in-chief of Spectre, the association's magazine. I am very happy with this new opportunity, and very proud of being offered such an important job at my age. Madam Executive... I won't get use to it... lol!!

Set Carré will suffer from this for sure. But I will continue to sew and bring you my creations and findings. Also, my new job will allow me to speed up the improvements on my house. I'll show you the results!

La semaine dernière, on m'a offert la direction générale de l'Association pour l'enseignement de la science et de la technologie au Québec (APSQ). J'ai accepté, bien entendu! Je serai également rédactrice en chef de la revue Spectre publiée par l'organisme. Je suis très heureuse de cette nouvelle opportunité et très fière qu'on m'offre un poste si important à mon âge. Madame la directrice... je ne m'habituerai pas! lol!!

Yé! J'ai eu la job à AGIR Maskinongé!
Je suis très contente parce que je suis certaine d'adorer mon travail.

Mais je suis en même temps très inquiète. Le salaire me permet tout juste de payer mon hypothèque, mes comptes, ma dette étudiante, l'entretien de ma voiture et mon épicerie. Point à la ligne. Pas vêtements, pas de sorties, pas de rénovations de ma maison... Aucune marge de manoeuvre pour les bad luck et toujours pas un sous pour des REER.

Je devrai donc compter sur Set Carré. Mais les ventes sont très mauvaises depuis les Fêtes. Les américains, affectés par la crise, semblent avoir déserté Etsy. Et la baisse du dollar canadien à fait augmenter mes coûts de production de 20%.

Quel retour en arrière quand même! Ils disent que St-Gabriel est une ville dévitalisée, c'est-à-dire entre autres que l'économie régresse d'année en année. C'est bien vrai! D'année en année, mes conditions d'emploi régressent...

Quand même, un travail valorisant et une ambiance de travail agréable, ça ne paie pas de comptes, mais ça vaut cher...

Mon coin de paradis

Je reviens d'une entrevue d'embauche à AGIR Maskinongé, un organisme voué au maintien et à l'amélioration de la qualité de l'eau dans mon coin de pays. Cela m'a rappelé un endroit paradisiaque situé dans la Réserve Mastigouche que je fréquente le plus souvent possible l'été. Cette rivière, Mastigouche Nord, est tout à fait MA-GNI-FI-QUE. Je serais très contente de tavailler à en préserver l'intégrité!

L'entrevue a bien été, j'étais à l'aise, donc moi-même, et les discussions étaient intéressantes. Les bureaux sont à quelques rues de chez moi, la descritpion de tâches correspond en tout point à mon profil et j'aime déjà ceux qui seraient mes futurs collègues. Mais bon, je ne m'emballe pas, attendons voir la décision du comité d'embauche.

This cute baby kit is a special order from a virtual friend of mine zamzamdesign (yes, that girl who designed my logo). I made a patchwork bib, a burp cloth, a diaper case and 4 crochet wash cloths. The fabric I used is Yellow Martini from Amy Butler's collection, Midwest Modern.

Ce petit ensemble pour bébé est une commande spéciale d'une amie virtuelle, zamzamdesign (oui, oui, cette fille qui a conçu mon logo). L'ensemble comprend une bavette en patchwork, un burp cloth (traduction SVP!!, un linge pour roter, c'est pas très beau), une pochette à couches et 4 débarbouillettes crochetées. What do you usually sew?
Patchwork goodies, quilts and housewares.
When you shop for fabric, what size cuts do you usually buy? (i.e. If you see something beautiful, but you don’t have a use for it right away, how much do you buy?)
I buy half a yard and later I am mad at me because I didn't buy more.
Do you buy on impulse or do you go out looking for something you need?

Are you a pre-washer?
Yes, but still wondering if it's a good idea... I wash them as soon as they get home.
Do you iron it?
Yes, I would love a new iron!!!
How do you sort it? (color, print size, collection, etc.)
By color. I have a bunch of clear plastic shoe boxes : one is for my green prints, one is for my solid greens, one is for my blue prints, one is for my solid blues, and so on. Even my scraps are sorted by color.

Do you have any special folding techniques?
Not really, as long as it fits in my boxes.
How do you store your fabric?
All my plastic boxes are stacked in one corner of the room. But I would like to buy shelves soon.
What tips do you have for building up a well-rounded stash?

My creations at MATERIA

My little bibs and my quilts will be available at MATERIA Craft Artist-run Centre at Quebec City from January 22 to March 15. I can't beleive I have been chosen to sell my creations in that institution's shop to coincide with the exhibition Du quilt au corps taillé (I could translate by From quilt to carved body) which will introduce two artists, the ceramic artist Jacinthe Baribeau and the quilter Karen Grenier.

Are hard days over?

Did you know that my boyfriend and I lost our jobs in the same week last spring? Yep, that was hard to take for a young couple that had just made a big investment… Since then, it seems there’s nothing to do in the area where we live: jobs are rare, underpaid and/or part-time and almost never permanent. Unless willing to do two hours of driving a day, nothing is interesting.

That’s how I decided to start my Etsy shop. My shop’s been running for four months now and I’m pretty happy with how it’s going. And Marc? Well, he’s doing some home improvement and helping me a lot. He’s excellent at perfectly cutting my fabric pieces, he sharpens my rotary cutter blades, he helps me write my articles in English and I’m pretty sure he would be good on my sewing machine after only an hour of practice. In fact, I forbid him to touch it because I’m sure he would quickly become better at it than me!!

I recently proposed Marc an idea for a second Etsy shop. He didn’t hesitate a second and we started working hard and developing this business. It should be running in a few days or weeks. I can’t wait to present you this second shop!! And I already have an idea for a third one…

Saviez-vous que mon chum et moi avons perdu nos emplois dans la même semaine au printemps dernier? Ouais, dur coup pour un jeune couple qui venait tout juste de faire un gros investissement... Depuis, il n'y a rien à faire, dans la région où nous vivons, les emplois sont rares, mal payés et/ou à temps partiel et jamais permanent. À moins d'accepter de faire deux heures ou plus de voiture par jour, rien d'intéressant.

C'est comme ça que je me suis décidée à démarrer ma boutique sur Etsy. Ma boutique a plus de trois mois maintenant et je suis très contente de ses débuts. Marc lui? Et bien il rénove la maison tranquillement et il m'aide beaucoup. Il est excellent pour couper mes morceaux à la perfection, il aiguise mes lames de couteau rotatif, il m'aide à écrire en anglais et je suis certaine qu'il serait très bon sur ma machine à coudre après seulement une heure de pratique. En fait, je lui interdit d'essayer ma machine parce que je suis certaine qu'il deviendrait vite meilleur que moi!!

J'ai dernièrement proposé à Marc une idée pour une deuxième boutique sur Etsy. Il n'a pas hésité un quart de seconde et on s'est mis à travailler très fort à développer cette entreprise qui devrait voir le jour dans quelques jours ou semaines. J'ai très hâte de vous présenter cette deuxième boutique!! Et j'ai déjà des plans pour une troisième...

I have received from Amazon this morning the Christmas gift I made to myself. The Sweden designer Lotta Jansdotter teaches us different techniques to print on any surface. I red it in a hour. Now I have tons of ideas for some new projects to create in 2009. I can't wait to try printing on fabric and put my creations online!

Je viens de recevoir d'Amazon le cadeau de Noël que je me suis fait. La designer suédoise Lotta Jansdotter nous apprend dans ce livre différentes techniques d'impression sur tous types de surface. I just did a speech in a press conference, in front of youths and important people from my area, and local TV. Everyone who knows me knows that it’s not my cup of tea, to do speeches in public… I was representing Forum jeunesse Lanaudière (Lanaudiere’s Youth Forum), an organisation in which I volunteer and that finances projects for youth development in my area.

The press conference was about the results of a project financed by the Forum which I could translate by I do business in class. This project aimed at high school potential dropouts. They had the opportunity to start a little local economy business. With a teacher and an entrepreneurship agent, they created a business that produces and sales totes made from recycled clothes given by the community. The tote shown here is one of their realisations that I bought.

This project touch many of my chords : the youth in general, the young dropouts, the green movement, craft, entrepreneurship and the development of my poor little town which the population and economy drop years after years. Who knows! One of these youths might become a Set Carré's employee! or its competitor...

Ouf! Je suis encore vivante... Je viens de prononcer un discours dans le cadre d'une conférence de presse, devant des jeunes, quelques personnages importants de ma région, et la télévision locale. Ceux qui me connaissent savent que ce n'est pas ma tasse de thé, les allocutions publiques... Je représentais le Forum jeunesse Lanaudière, une organisation pour laquelle je suis bénévole et qui finance des projets touchant le développement des jeunes de ma région.

La conférence de presse portait sur les résultats d'un projet que le Forum a financé, Je fais des affaires en classe, et qui a permis à des jeunes du secondaire potentiellement décrocheurs de créer une petite entreprise d'économie sociale. Avec leur professeur et une intervenante en entrepreneuriat, les jeunes ont créé une entreprise qui confectionne et vend des sacs créés à partir de vêtement recyclés. Le sac montré sur la photo ci-dessus est une de leurs créations que j'ai achetée.

Ce projet touche à beaucoup de mes cordes sensibles : la jeunesse en général, les jeunes décrocheurs, l'environnement, l'artisanat, l'entrepreneuriat et le développement de ma pauvre ville dont la population et l'économie régressent d'année en année. Qui sait? Peut-être qu'un de ces jeunes deviendra un futur employé de Set Carré! ou un compétiteur...

Est-ce que je vous ai dit que j'étais insomniaque? Je l'ai toujours été. Jamais de ma vie je n'ai bien dormi. Jamais je ne me réveille le matin avec la sensation de m'être reposée. Je paierais très cher pour avoir cette chance, un matin dans ma vie, de me lever fraîche et dispose. My favorite project

I wish I had more time to work on that quilt. I've been working on it since more than a year now. Everything is done by hand and the method, english parper piecing, involves a lot of steps.

A Grandmother's Flower Garden Quilt is a classic quilt pattern. But this one will be made from modern fabrics. I think it would be very nice...

J'aimerais avoir plus de temps pour cette courtepointe. J'y travaille depuis plus d'un an. Tout est fait à la main et la méthode, la couture sur papier (english paper piecing), implique de nombreuses étapes.

Les fleurs de grand-mère est un patron classique de courtepointe. Mais celle-ci sera faite de tissu moderne. Je crois qu'elle sera belle...

Quilt restoration

Antique Quilt, première mise en ligne par Set Carré.

That is an old quilt that I restored for a friend of mine. His grandmother made it probably in the 30s. That was a lot of work since my friend has washed it in a machine several times (Shame on him!!!).

What I had to do :
- Take off the old binding;
- Sew by hand about a 60 unsewn seams;
- Find fabrics that coordinate the old ones and patch 3 big holes (by appliqué);
- Create and sew a new binding.

It took me around 24 hours but I am happy with the result. Hopefully it will last another 75 years!

J'ai restauré cette courtepointe antique pour un ami. C'est sa grand-mère qui l'a cousue probablement dans les années 30. Ce fut tout un travail étant donné que l'ami en question l'avait lavée à la machine, sacrilège!!

Voici le travail effectué :
- découdre et retirer l'ancienne bordure déchirée;
- recoudre environ 60 coutures décousues;
- trouver des tissus pour coordonner les anciens et réparer trois grands trous (par appliqué);
- créer et coudre une nouvelle bordure.

J'y ai mis 24 heures de travail, mais je suis contente du résultat. En espérant que la courtepointe tiendra un autre 75 ans!
